Kua Number Calculator
📅 Uses Li Chun (Beginning of Spring) as the Feng Shui year boundary.
Your Kua number is the starting point of Feng Shui's Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) system — a personal number derived from your birth year and gender that sorts you into the East or West group and reveals four supportive and four draining compass directions for your home, desk, and bed.

How the Kua Number Is Calculated
The last two digits of your birth year are added together and reduced to a single digit. Male and female charts use different final formulas (the systems diverge for births before and after 2000), which is why the same birth year can give a man and a woman different Kua numbers. This calculator uses the Li Chun (~February 4) Feng Shui year boundary rather than the Western calendar or the Lunar New Year — if you were born in the first weeks of January or early February, your Kua is calculated from the previous year.
East Group vs West Group
Kua numbers 1, 3, 4 and 9 form the East group; 2, 6, 7 and 8 form the West group. Kua 5 has no directions of its own — by long-standing convention, men with Kua 5 use Kua 2's table and women with Kua 5 use Kua 8's table. Each group's four auspicious directions are drawn from the other group's four inauspicious ones — the two groups are mirror opposites, which is why mixing them (e.g. an East-group person sleeping in a West-group direction) is considered self-defeating in this system.
Using Your Four Good Directions
Success (Sheng Chi) is traditionally reserved for the main door — where opportunity enters. Health (Tien Yi) is best faced while resting or recovering — bed orientation matters more than desk. Love (Nien Yen) supports relationships and is often used for a shared bedroom's door direction. Growth (Fu Wei) is the mildest, steadiest direction — good for study and meditation. The four inauspicious directions are not to be feared; they simply are not where you want your most important facings pointed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kua number the same as Life Path number?
No — they come from different systems entirely. Life Path (Pythagorean/Chaldean numerology) reads your full date of birth for personality and life themes. Kua number (Chinese Feng Shui / Eight Mansions) reads only your birth year and gender for compass-direction guidance. Many people use both.
Why do men and women born in the same year get different Kua numbers?
The Eight Mansions system has always used separate formulas for male and female charts — this isn't a modern addition, it's part of the traditional calculation from the outset.
Does the Kua number change if I was born in January?
It can. This calculator uses the Li Chun solar boundary (~February 4), the convention most Western Feng Shui practitioners follow, not January 1 or the Lunar New Year. Births before Li Chun use the prior year's Kua.
What if my Kua number is 5?
Kua 5 has no direction table of its own. By standard convention, men use the Kua 2 table and women use the Kua 8 table — this calculator applies that automatically.
